B'racha Center for Jewish Connections

These are the duties whose worth cannot be measured” --(Peah 1:1)

The B'racha Center is a place where people are comfortable receiving blessings and giving blessings. Acts of mutual responsibility for one another (Ar’vut hadadit) and acts of love and kindness (G’milut chasadim) help us to achieve a place where people are comfortable to be a blessing and to receive a blessing. These acts reflect the beauty and power of our fundamental relationship with God and help us to create a life-affirming, sacred community (kehillah kedusha).

Summer with the B’racha Center

Now that the summer months are here, and, hopefully, life slows down at least a bit, consider joining B’racha Center volunteers for some of the most rewarding means of Jewish connection. Vivian Lawsky, one of our regular Charles Morris singers, issued her invitation to “a few good men and women of any age to join the once monthly singing group.” As she says, “anyone can join – no special singing skills required. It’s fun singing familiar songs, and terrific to see the residents, some of whom are greatly impaired, light up when they join us in song.” Or become a member of our friendly visitors corps – we have many Temple members and relatives in residential care who would welcome your smiling face and good company. Ellie Bernstein, a long time volunteer visitor, offered this personal reflection: “It is an indescribable pleasure and honor to earn the trust and respect of an older adult whose face brightens as soon as I walk into the room.” Volunteers in the Caring Delivery program bring solace to Temple members mourning the deaths of loved ones, and welcome our newest Temple members with gifts to new babies and their families. Family Ties participants get to make Pittsburgh feel a little more like home to Jewish young people attending our area universities. Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers help with transportation and other occasional needs of Temple members.

Or, take the opportunity this summer to connect with one of the B’racha Center affinity groups, for a year’s worth of sharing fun, experiences, and Jewish learning. Senior Adults schedule four to five trips or events every year, and their planning committee would welcome your input. Interfaith couples meet for potluck meals in each other’s homes, and enjoy lively and helpful discussions of shared concerns and joys in Interfaith Outreach. The 20’s-30’s welcome and encourage Temple’s younger members – singles and families—to join in a wide variety of activities: picnics, Jewish holiday parties, happy hours, sports events, learning luncheons and Shabbat get-togethers.

And, don’t forget to watch for and join Temple members in the B’racha Center summertime leisure activities: bike rides, Bach, Beethoven, and Brunch, and the B’racha Center picnic are all in the plans.

Watch the Website calendar, Doorways, and “This Week at Sinai” for B’racha Center activities, including Bach, Beethoven & Brunch in Mellon Park, bike rides for families and longer distance riders, and the B’racha Center picnic.
