The world is sustained by three things: by Torah, by worship, and by loving deeds

Worship is intended to be a part of every Jew’s life, and Shabbat is arguably our most important holiday. At Temple Sinai, we believe that worship is not “one size fits all.” There is a style of Shabbat service for everyone, and we invite you to participate in any or all of them. *Our schedule of services is generally as follows:

  • First Friday of the Month: Services begin at 7:00 PM. During most of the school year we offer Mostly Musical Shabbat, featuring Cantorial Soloist Sara Stock Mayo and the Temple Sinai Band. There is no Torah Service or sermon.
  • The Second Friday of the Month: Generally Temple Sinai’s more “traditional” service, beginning at 8:00 PM, with organ accompaniment, a Torah Service and a sermon.
  • Third Friday of the Month: Often less formal, beginning at 8:00 PM with some guitar accompaniment, a Torah Service and a sermon.
  • Saturday Morning Informal Morning Service: Casual dress but serious prayers, starting at 9:00 AM. Rabbi Gibson generally leads the service, which includes great music and full participation from the congregation. The Torah reading and d’var Torah are usually presented by lay leaders, and new participants are always welcome. Also join us for Torah study beginning at 8:30 AM.
  • Tot Shabbat: one Friday evening each month beginning at 6:00 PM for families with children 4 and under. Rabbi Gibson and Rabbi Freedman take turns leading Tot Shabbat.
  • Family Service: one Saturday morning a month, beginning at 9:30 AM. Rabbi Freedman leads a mixture of prayers and music designed to provide a Shabbat experience that every member of the family can enjoy. This is often a class service.
  • Thursday Evening Service: every Thursday at 7:30 PM. A mincha and ma'ariv (afternoon and evening) service for weekdays in the Barnett Chapel. Join us as we add weekday prayer to our Shabbat and holiday services. Whether you are saying Kaddish for a loved one or simply want to go home spiritually refreshed, this brief service offers the chance to pray and sing together.

*Use this as a guideline, but please refer to the Musical Menu in your monthly Temple Bulletin or to our online Calendar for changes in the schedule.

WORSHIP SERVICE HONORS

Participation in a worship service is called kavod in Hebrew (a kovet, in Yiddish), meaning “honor.” One of the Worship Committee’s functions is to offer people the honor of blessing the candles, saying Kiddush, or saying the prayers before and after the Torah reading. Normally, we invite people who are having special occasions (such as anniversaries or birthdays) or who are observing a Yahrzeit, but we are not limited to them. In fact, we would like to involve as many people as possible. So if you would like to participate in a Shabbat service, we would like to invite you to do so. (Don’t worry if you are uncomfortable with Hebrew; there are many ways to do the blessings, and the desire to participate is what matters.) Please contact me or the Temple office.
