Cantor Laura Berman is thrilled to return to her hometown of Pittsburgh and to join the dynamic Temple Sinai community. Formerly Cantor of The Conservative Synagogue in Westport, CT, she was known for creating an inviting, energetic, and accessible atmosphere during Shabbat and holiday services that blended a range of musical styles. Having a love for teaching, she developed and managed a large and highly-regarded b’nei mitzvah program and worked extensively with each participant, helping to nurture confident and competent students who reached new heights in their Hebrew learning and synagogue skills. She has officiated or co-officiated at a full range of lifecycle events, led choirs of children, teens, and adults, played guitar and sung each week with the preschool set, created family worship and education programs, and led a women’s Rosh Hodesh group for meaningful discussion. In an effort to make the Jewish cultural arts more accessible to the community, she also co-founded the Jewish Cultural Arts Council and co-produced under its banner several well-received music and film programs. She was appreciative of being honored by the synagogue for her years of service to the community.
Cantor Berman is a graduate of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of The Jewish Theological Seminary where she studied in Jerusalem and New York, earned a Masters in Sacred Music and a Diploma of Hazzan, and was the recipient of several awards including the Richard H. Holzer Memorial Prize, awarded to a graduating senior who demonstrates excellence in Judaica. She continues her professional development in the distance learning program offered by the Seminary’s William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education. This follows a successful career in banking and finance, having earned an MBA from The Wharton School. She is the kvelling mother of Sam.
