A fragrant adult education class series covering the history of spices, the current spice trade, using spices, and creating spice blends.

History of Jews & The Spice Trade with Rabbi Daniel Fellman (via Zoom), Wednesday, May 4, 6:30 PM, Free
Rabbi Fellman will walk us through the history of the spice trade—where it originated and how it connected and influenced the world. 

Current World of Spices with Ori Zohar (via Zoom), Wednesday, May 11, 6:30 PM, Free
Ori Zohar, co-founder of Burlap & Barrel, will discuss how they source their spices directly from farmer cooperatives and small farms. They visit farms and spend time with farmers, learning firsthand about the economic, social and cultural factors behind their farming methods, and they support them to improve the quality, quantity, and value of their products.  

ABOUT ORI ZOHAR
Ori is an experienced social entrepreneur and the co-founder of Burlap & Barrel, where he leads the company's domestic operations, eCommerce and finances. Ori's family moved to Baltimore, Maryland from Israel when he was 5 years old. He developed a love of all things food as a kid, learning to cook Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes from his parents. Hanita Kossowsky will demonstrate how to cook with different spices. Everyone will have an opportunity to smell the spices and taste the food.

Creating Spice Blends with Hanita Kossowsky (onsite), Fee: $15—Postponed; We will announce a new date soon.
There are interesting spice blends in every culture. You may have heard of Chinese 5 Spices or Garam masala, but have you used traditional Jewish blends such as Ras el Hanout, Hawaij, or Baharat? Hanita will explain the blends and everyone will have an opportunity to put together a blend of spices to take home.
