Rabbi James A. Gibson, Rabbi Emeritus, MHL, D.D.

Rabbi (Emeritus) Jamie Gibson led Temple Sinai in Pittsburgh, PA for 32 years, from 1988–2020. During that time, he ignited the spirit of its unique family of families through his joyful spirituality, his learned teaching and his passionate commitment to social justice in the Jewish community and beyond.

Rabbi Gibson is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received his bachelor’s degree in History (with distinction). Ordained by Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, he studied in both Jerusalem and Cincinnati. He holds a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters and an honorary Doctor of Divinity as well.

He is a Senior Rabbinic Fellow in the prestigious Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem and is also a Rabbinic Fellow in the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.

Rabbi Gibson presently holds the Rabbi Jason Z. Edelstein endowed lectureship in Catholic-Jewish Dialogue at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. He also teaches in the University of Pittsburgh OSHER program for older adults.

Rabbi Gibson serves as 2nd Vice Chair of the Pittsburgh City Human Relations Council. He is a long-standing member of the UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital Ethics Committee.

He is married to Barbara Schilmeister Gibson, retired perioperative registered nurse who worked at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Shadyside for 33 years. He is the proud father of Micah (Catherine), Avi and David and the delighted grandfather of Noa and Liora.
