PROTEST IN PEACE LEADS TO ACTION ON THE BALLOT

Tikkun Olam’s Civic Engagement is asking for your help by signing two petitions to place two important ballot initiatives focusing on criminal justice for the May 18 primary election.

1. Registered voters who live in Allegheny County to help control use of solitary confinement at the jail:

The ballot initiative severely restricts the use of solitary confinement, which has been abused as a way to avoid properly treating prisoners with mental illness. (Click here for more information: solitary confinement flyer and petition.)

2. Registered voters who live in the City of Pittsburgh to ban no-knock warrants:

This would add a binding referendum to the Home Rule Charter no ban no-knock warrants in the City of Pittsburgh to prevent dangerous situations that result from unannounced entry into one’s home. (Click here for more information: No-Knock flyer and petition.)

Deadline is February 16 to submit the petitions.  Working in concert with PIIN and the Alliance for Police Accountability, we need to collect a minimum of 27,000 for the County solitary confinement initiative and 12,000 for the City of Pittsburgh ban on no-knock warrants.

Where you can sign the petitions safely with Covid precautions (OR, print the petitions, sign, and drop off to any of these locations):

  • Temple Sinai January 25–February 12 from 11 AM–4 PM & February 14 until Noon to sign in the Krieger Entrance vestibule.

  • Frank and Carolyn Schwarz's front porch at 1930 Wightman Street, daily from 10 AM–4 PM through February 14 until Noon.

  • Ronnie Cook Zuhlke and Fred Zuhlke's front porch at 5730 Solway, daily from 10 AM–4 PM through February 14 until Noon.

If you want to collect signatures or want someone to come to your home for your signature, contact either Ronnie Cook Zuhlke at ronniecooks@gmail.com or Lynn Rubenson at lynnrubenson@gmail.com.

This effort is in concert with PIIN, which is endorsing the Alliance for Police Accountability (APA), a grassroots organization dedicated to criminal justice reconstruction, specializing in community and police relations.
