These are extraordinary times. Our young people, pre-teens and teens, face so many pressures, challenges, and distractions in places where they live, study, and play, including online. This is especially so for our children and youth experiencing marginalization and oppression. Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Miller, a physician specializing in care for adolescents and young adults and a longtime member of the Temple Sinai family, and Carly Coons, a Licensed Social Worker with the Blue Dove Foundation, will describe the mental health-related challenges that many young people deal with, and their strengths. They will also explore what we can do to help build communities that are resilient and where young people can thrive. Additionally, they will discuss how parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, family friends, and members of the community can help our young people benefit from resources and supports that are more accessible than people may believe.
Lynn Rubenson, President of WoTS, will moderate the conversation.
Liz Miller, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of pediatrics, public health, and clinical and translational science at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is a physician in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and the Medical Director of Community and Population Health at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, with a focus on caring for young people who are system-involved. She has more than 20 years of practice and community-partnered research experience.
Carly Coons, LSW, is Director of Education and Programming at the Blue Dove Foundation. She leads the organization in curating and creating mental health resources that integrate Judaism and mental wellness into communities. She has built a career in the Jewish community focused on youth and teen mental health. Carly resides in Denver and will be participating remotely.
