Sermon in a Song
One of the hallmarks of rabbinic learning is to ground a sermon in a text, usually a Torah or midrashic text; after 35 years of doing just that as a congregational rabbi, Deborah Zecher has turned to another passion for sermonic prooftexts: the music of the Great American songbook. In this program, Rabbi Zecher will provide a list of one sentence sermon concepts and then sing a selection from the Great American songbook. The congregation gets to choose which sermon concept is illuminated by that song. Lots of lively conversation because after all, two Jews, three opinions!
ABOUT RABBI DEBBIE ZECHER
For 35 years, Pittsburgh native Deborah Zecher served as a rabbi and often cantor in Reform congregations in NY, Washington, DC, and the Berkshires. She was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in NY in 1982, becoming one of the first 50 women rabbis in the world. Years ago, she enrolled in an adult cabaret class at the Berkshire Music School and her love for the world of cabaret was born. She has been a Cabaret Fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Center in CT and recently attended the Il Chiostro Cabaret Workshop in Venic, Italy. Her first NYC cabaret show, ON PURPOSE, a musical memoir, was nominated for a MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) Award and broadwayworld.com award for best debut. She is also a member of Four Women, Four Stories, a Broadway World-nominated show featuring the songs of Jewish composers and the life stories of the four Jewish women who comprise the cast.
Rabbi Zecher is married to Rabbi Dennis Ross and they are the proud parents of Joshua and Sam Adam and Eliya, and Miriam and Daniel; they are the ecstatic grandparents of Libi, Alma, and Yizhar. She is the daughter of Temple Sinai member Rita Zecher.
